You usually pay nothing. California law requires the manufacturer to pay your attorney if you win or settle.
How long will my lemon law case take?

What happens during a lemon law case?
Your attorney reviews your repair history, sends a demand to the manufacturer, and negotiates. Many cases settle without a lawsuit. If not, a lawsuit is filed and pushed toward resolution.
What is the lemon law buyback in California?
A buyback means the manufacturer repurchases your vehicle. You get a refund of payments, down payment, taxes, registration, and sometimes remaining loan balance, minus a small mileage offset.
What is the average lemon law settlement in California?
It varies. Many cases end in a full buyback or a cash settlement ranging from several thousand dollars to tens of thousands, depending on the defect and vehicle value.
What if I'm still making payments?
You usually keep making payments during the case. If you win, the manufacturer typically pays off the loan or reimburses you.
Can I file after 18 months?
Yes. The 18-month period is a presumption window, not a hard deadline. You can still have a valid case after that.
